Readers,
I thought today I would just briefly mention something that might actually
already be evident to some of you.
It has to do with reading comprehension and learning new vocabulary.
If you are reading a text in English, for example this blog, and you encounter a word that is unfamiliar to you, please use a good dictionary to check the meaning of the word!
If you just ignore the word, you cannot increase your vocabulary, let alone understand the text properly.
To check every unfamiliar word from a dictionary might be troublesome in the
beginning, but at the end of the day it pays off.
Everything you do regularly accumulates. So if you study new vocabulary as you encounter it, you are able to understand the language you are studying that much better.
Furthermore, you cannot appreciate what you don't understand.
So in order to be able to *appreciate* various texts in English, you should be
able to *understand* them more or less perfectly.
A lot of you have electronic dictionaries which I think are very handy.
If you don't own one yet, there are dictionaries online that are quite useful.
For example, Denshi Jisho is a decent Japanese-English-Japanese dictionary,
and you can find it at http://jisho.org/.
My recommendation would, however, be The Free Dictionary, but then that's an Englsh-English dictionary, so I would only recommend it for intermediate or advanced students.
What I love about http://www.thefreedictionary.com is that it has all sorts of useful things on its front page.
For me, the most interesting feature of the front page is The Quotation of the Day.
I like quotations, and because I have The Free Dictionary as my home page on my personal computer, I read their Quotation of the Day every day.
In that way, I have accumulated a fairly large amount of good quotations during the four-five years that I've been using the site.
Anyway, my main point today was to encourage you to keep on finding out the
meanings of unfamiliar words if you're not already doing so!
And to assist you in doing that, Denshi Jisho or The Free Dictionary might prove useful.
Thanks for reading and enjoy the rest of your day
